England
Task 1. General Information (15 minutes)
With the help of a search engine such as Google, find out the answers to the following questions:
1. Which two countries of the United Kingdom have a land border with England?
2. What is the national flower of England?
3. Why is this the national flower?
4. England is split into a number of counties (the different coloured areas in the map above). On the answer sheet, write how many counties there are
in England, and give three names of counties.
5. In the space provided on the answer sheet, draw a picture of the English flag. [Tip: this flag has two colours!]
Task 2. London (30 minutes)
The capital city of the United Kingdom is London. London is also the capital city of England.
Watch Visit Britain’s podcast about London (click here).
A. Answer the following questions on the answer sheet:
1. Where does the name “Big Ben” come from?
2. What has been happening in Westminster Abbey since 1066?
3. When did the London Eye open?
4. What was Covent Garden before it became an area with restaurants and bars?
5. What is The City?
B. Think about what you have just watched in the podcast. Choose one of the attractions that you saw and research it on the internet. You can
start by going to www.google.com. If you would go to London, which of the attractions would you visit? Why? Write your answer (max 50 words) on the answer sheet.
C. You are now going to have a conversation (in English!) with someone in your class who did not choose the same attraction as you. You have to
convince them that your choice is better! Write the name of the person you spoke to on the answer sheet, and also whether you kept your choice, or whether you were convinced to go somewhere else.
End of lesson 1.
