Assignment 1
Individually, you are going to read one of the following books: and then complete a written task:
- Robinson Crusoe, by Daniel Defoe (Read online and for free here)
- Frankenstein, by Mary Shelley (Read online and for free here)
- Gulliver's Travels, by Jonathan Swift (Read onlne and for free here)
In order to complete the written task successfully, you will not only need to read the book, but also look at the context in which it was written (think of the author's purpose and audience). For instance (this is not the only thing, just an example!!), look into what was going on in the world at the time of writing. What influence could this have had on content and language choice, or on the style of writing? You will also be expected to conduct background research into the novel so that you are well-equipped to complete your written task.
Every week, I will organise small group seminars in which we can talk about the book while the other groups continue to work on their assignments. You will be expected to bring your reasearch and ideas to these lessons (Mondays and Wednesdays)
