Listening Skills

When you are in the final year of your studies, you will take an audio-visual exam (NL: kijk-en luistertoets), but how can you be sure to get a good mark?

The most important thing is to regularly listen to English. The subject of the exam is usually rather academic, but you don't have to only practice with this. Why not start by watching your favourite music clip on YouTube and trying to write down the lyrics? You can also watch your favourite scenes of popular television series on YouTube, why not watch these without subtitles? When you're confident, you should move on to watching programmes that interest you on the BBC or CNN, or even try watching a film. Don't watch anything boring, you won't pay attention and you won't learn! Try to listen to at least an hour of authentic English per week. Sounds like a lot, but it's less than ten minutes per day!
Additionally, visit www.esl-lab.com. This site has listening texts of different levels with accompanying questions and answers. It's great to practise!
